Q. How does a dove release work?
A. On the day of your special event, we arrive early, dressed appropriately, to ensure that the dove release proceeds smoothly. At the designated time, the doves are released from a white wicker basket. The doves tend to circle overhead for a short time to get their bearings, then begin their journey from your event location in the greater Boston area to their loft in North Andover.
Q. Can I release the doves myself?
A. Although a trained dove handler must remain on site to ensure the safe handling of the doves, the doves are extremely gentle and we allow doves to be released by others.
Q. Are the doves able to safely return?
A. Yes. The doves have a powerful homing instinct and are regularly exercised and trained. We release only trained white homing doves outdoors during daylight hours and only within the greater Boston / Cape Cod area so that the doves can arrive home safely the same day. We carry our white doves in safe and comfortable, well-ventilated wicker baskets or cages that provide adequate ventilation and allow for safe transport. Releasing doves is thoroughly humane.
Q. How are the doves housed?
A. Doves have been kept by people throughout recorded history. Our doves are extremely well cared for. They are housed in a specially designed coop with access to a large screened area where they can stretch their wings and interact with other members of their flock.
Q. What do doves eat?
A. Doves are fed a mix of wild bird seed and cracked corn. As they have no teeth, they also need access to fine gravel or "grit," which helps them digest their food.
Q. Can doves fly in any weather?
A. High wind, heavy rain, and other stormy conditions make flight difficult and dangerous for the birds. In order to ensure their safe return home, we will not release the birds under such conditions and a refund will be given minus a $50.00 booking fee.
Q. How far can doves fly from their nest or "loft"?
A. Doves are capable of flying extremely long distances. Flights as long as 1,100 miles have been recorded by birds in competitive racing. The longer the flight, of course, the greater the risk to the birds caused by predators and weather conditions.
Q. How fast can doves fly?
A. Doves fly an average of approximately 50 MPH but speeds of 95 MPH have been recorded. Before beginning their return flight home after being released, however, the doves tend to slowly circle the area to get their bearings. This allows time for your guests to see these beautiful birds in flight.
Q. What do doves eat?
A. Doves eat a specially balanced diet of wild bird seed, corn, and other grains. During their return flight, they will not pause for food or water until they are safely home.
